Since 2004 Ungana-Afrika has been contracted
to facilitate
several trainings and workshops about various technologies or
technology related processes. These events have varied from a few hour
training sessions up to several-day workshops. Our role has varied from
being a lead facilitator to more supporting responsibilities, and the
work has varied from purely using existing training materials to
designing the sessions from scratch and even developing open content
trainers materials to be used around the world by other trainers.

Strategic Technology Planning Workshop Series
Strategic technology planning is the process of
strategically deciding what technology should be implemented to best
complement an organisation's mission, strategy and activities.
Ungana-Afrika has been providing strategic technology planning services
to the development community in Southern Africa for many years. The
processes have been refined through experience and shared openly via
the Ungana-Afrika Strategic Technology Planning Guide and a series of workshops.
To date Ungana-Afrika has delivered 3 focused
strategic tech planning workshops to variety of audiences in the
Southern Africa region, ranging from 1 day to a comprehensive full-week
program on the topic. These workshops explore the importance of
technology planning, the processes/tools/resource involved,
implementation strategies, etc. Workshop audiences have included:
- Association for Progressive Communication (APC) Members Orgs.
As part of a 2005 Council meeting, Ungana-Afrika provided a 1-day
technology planning overview workshop to a large cross-sector audience
from the international APC community.
- Women'sNet Partners in Southern Africa.
As part of Women'sNet “Building Support and Awareness for the use
of Free and Open Source Software Solutions (FOSS) in Women's
Organisations”, Ungana-Afrika facilitated a 5-day technology
planning and implementation track targeted to the unique needs of
African women's groups.
- The SADC Parliamentary Forum.
During a 2006 meeting for IT Managers of Parliament, Ungana-Afrika
deliverd a series of presentations on the importance and processes of
technology planning.
Secure Computing and Online Communications
Ungana-Afrika was contracted by APC to be the
coordinator of a 3-day workshop during the the world's largest
conference for African journalists in Grahamstown, South Africa, during
September 2004. The work included material development, training, and
facilitation during the workshop. In addition, Ungana-Afrika developed
re-usable training materials for a second workshop which was organised
in the Philippines.
NGOs and ICT Capacity Strategies
Ungana-Afrika facilitated training for an
executive course for NGO Leaders in Africa during November 2006. The
contents included issues around the ICT Capacity Crisis, Capacity
Building and Support Options, basics of Strategic Technology Planning,
and examples of toolkits, resources, and web-sites. The full course was
organized by The Centre of Specialization in Public Administration and
Management (CESPAM) located at the University of Botswana.
FOSS Migration for NGOs
In 2006, Ungana-Afrika helped to facilitate a
“FOSS Migration for NGO's” track as part of Africa Source
II, an event supporting Free and Open Source Software for Local
Communities. This eight day hands-on workshop aimed at building the
technical skills of those working with and within NGOs on the
continent. Over a hundred and thirty NGO support professionals and NGO
staff working at the local level across the region were present at
Africa Source. Together with a handful of field leaders from Africa,
Europe, North America and Asia, they explored how technology can best
serve the non-profit sector in Africa both in terms of access and
content.
Technology Training for Community Radios
Community radio stations play a significant role
in the societal development of disadvantaged communities, and
Ungana-Afrika has a been assisting this sector in South Africa since
2003. As part of a year-long support and capacity building program that
was initiated in 2004, Ungana-Afrika delivered direct group and
one-on-one training to numerous stations across South Africa. 62 staff
members and volunteers were involved in the project and were trained in
different applications relevant to their work role and based on their
skills level. Training topics included basic computer use, office
productivity tools, digital broadcast and production systems, and
various mediums of digital communications (e-mail, internet, etc.).
Community Wireless Workshops
The high cost of conventional “wired”
infrastructure is an obstacle to those looking to harness the potential
of ICTs for development and social change. Wireless technologies offer
tested, low-cost options to complement conventional infrastructure -
but in order for the promise of wireless to be fulfilled, interventions
are needed at a number of levels, ranging from policy, to technical
development, to capacity building.
During 2005 and 2006 the Association for
Progressive Communication (APC) implemented a “Capacity building
for community wireless connectivity in Africa” partnership
project, and Ungana-Afrika was brought on as a training facilitation
partner for a 2005 week-long workshop in South Africa. During this
regional technical workshop facilitators harnessed, and contributed to,
the development of public MMTK wireless training resources that continue to serve the development community.
