Ungana-Afrika was working with Women'sNet
to assess the
current use and future potential of mobile technologies for
development. The project was commissioned by UNICEF to investigate how
short messaging service (SMS) technologies were being used for
development purposes, with a specific focus on HIV/AIDS prevention,
treatment and care, in South Africa and the region. Ungana-Afrika's
role in the project was to develop technology benchmarks for the use of
SMS technology in respect of HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care.
Based on this framework, Ungana-Afrika developed three case studies
including an assessment of the technology use of these projects.
Finally, as an outcome of the process, Ungana-Afrika provided case
specific recommendations as well as high-level conclusions to be
considered by UNICEF, in case the organisation would use mobile
technologies as a component of their future programs.
